Story
The recipe inspired by Slovak tradition of drinking hot herbal infusion with honey and tallow, topped up with strong spirit has been passed down the generations throughout Slovak mountain regions.
A modern version of TATRATEA saw the light of the day in 2004. Out of all traditional recipes, we selected the best one and crafted the first 52 % ORIGINAL. Bold bottle shape lines are inspired by a thermos flask used in the Tatra Mountains. The iconic logo shaped as the T letter reflects traditional Slovak folk culture elements.
Traditional way of serving hot mountain teas once showcased an experience. The lights would be turned off, spirit in the drink lit on fire and a blind shot fired into the air from a gun. People believed this ritual intensified the tea‘s healing power and warded off evil spirits.
TATRATEA is produced in Tatra Distillery, which is based in Kežmarok – Pradiareň (spinning mill), initially built for linen weaving. Built in 19th century, it was one of the most modern factories in the whole of Austro-Hungarian Empire. Thanks to its preserved beautiful and timeless architecture, the main production facility was declared a national technical monument.
We have attentively reconstructed the factory and made it partially accessible to the public in the form of engaging tasting experiences.
